SFP 4: 442ND REGHIMENTAL COMBAT TEAM DAY.
EXISTING LAW AUTHORIZES THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES TO PROCLAIM ANY DAY AS A FEDERAL HOLIDAY OR DAY OF REMEMBRANCE.
THIS MEASURE WOULD MEMORIALIZE THE CONGRESS AND THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES TO ENACT LEGISLATION TO PROCLAIM A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE FOR THE 442ND REGIMENTAL COMBAT TEAM.

SFP 4: RELATING TO FEDERAL OBSERVANCES
WHEREAS, DURING WORLD WAR II, JAPANESE AMERICANS FROM HAWAII AND CALIFORNIA VOLUNTEERED TO DEFEND THE UNITED STATES DESPITE THE FACT THAT MANY OF THESE SOLDIERS’ FAMILIES WERE HELD IN INTERNMENT CAMPS IN THE UNITED STATES; AND
WHEREAS, AS MEMBERS OF THE 442ND REGIMENTAL COMBAT TEAM OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY, THESE AMERICANS HAD MANY CASUALTIES, BUT THE TEAM, FOR ITS SIZE AND LENGTH OF SERVICE, WAS THE HIGHEST DECORATED REGIMENT IN THE UNITED STATES ARMY, INCLUDING RECEIVING SEVEN PRESIDENTIAL UNIT CITATIONS, 21 MEDALS OF HONOR, 52 DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSSES, ONE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD, 560 SILVER STARS, 22 LEGION OF MERIT MEDALS, 15 SOLDIER’S MEDALS, 9,486 PURPLE HEARTS, AND MORE THAN 4,000 BRONZE STARS; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT
RESOLVED, BY THE SENIOR SENATE AND THE SENIOR ASSEMBLY, JOINTLY, THAT THE SENIOR LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA AT ITS 2012 REGULAR SESSION, A MAJORITY OF THE MEMBERS VOTING THEREFOR, HEREBY PROPOSES THAT A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE BE SET ASIDE FOR THE 442ND REGIMENTAL COMBAT TEAM; AND BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED, THAT THE SENIOR LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA RESPECTFULLY MEMORIALIZES THE CONGRESS AND THE PRESIDENT TO ENACT APPROPRIATE LEGISLATION THAT WOULD ADDRESS THE CONCERNS SET FORTH IN THIS MEASURE; AND BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED, THAT A COPY OF THIS MEASURE BE TRANSMITTED TO THE PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT, THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE CHAIRPERSONS OF THE HOUSE AND SENATE COMMITTEES ON AGING, AND TO EACH SENATOR AND REPRESENTATIVE FROM CALIFORNIA IN THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES.
