SP 6: 442ND REGIMENTAL COMBAT TEAM DAY.
EXISTING LAW REQUIRES THE GOVERNOR TO PROCLAIM VARIOUS DAYS AS HOLIDAYS AND DAYS OF REMEMBRANCE.
THIS MEASURE WOULD MEMORIALIZE THE LEGISLATURE AND THE GOVERNOR TO ENACT LEGISLATION TO PROCLAIM A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE FOR THE 442ND REGIMENTAL COMBAT TEAM.
VOTE: MAJORITY.
SP 6: RELATING TO STATE OBSERVANCES
WHEREAS, DURING WORLD WAR II, JAPANESE AMERICANS FROM HAWAII AND CALIFORNIA VOLUNTEERED TO DEFEND THE UNITED STATES DESPITE THE FACT THAT MANY OF THESE SOLDIERS’ FAMILIES WERE HELD IN INTERNMENT CAMPS IN THE UNITED STATES; AND
WHEREAS, AS MEMBERS OF THE 442ND REGIMENTAL COMBAT TEAM OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY, THESE AMERICANS HAD MANY CASUALTIES, BUT THE TEAM FOR ITS SIZE AND LENGTH OF SERVICE WAS THE HIGHEST DECORATED REGIMENT IN THE UNITED STATES ARMY, INCLUDING 21 MEDALS OF HONOR, 52 DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSSES, 1 DISTINGUISHED SERVICE MEDAL, 560 SILVER STARS, 22 LEGION OF MERIT MEDALS, 15 SOLDIER’S MEDALS, 4,000 BRONZE STARS, AND 9,486 PURPLE HEARTS; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT
RESOLVED, BY THE SENIOR SENATE AND THE SENIOR ASSEMBLY, JOINTLY, THAT THE SENIOR LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA AT ITS 2011 REGULAR SESSION, A MAJORITY OF THE MEMBERS VOTING THEREFOR, HEREBY PROPOSES THAT A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE BE SET ASIDE FOR THE 442ND REGIMENTAL COMBAT TEAM; AND BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED, THAT THE SENIOR LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA RESPECTFULLY MEMORIALIZES THE LEGISLATURE AND THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA TO ENACT APPROPRIATE LEGISLATION THAT WOULD ADDRESS THE CONCERNS SET FORTH IN THIS MEASURE; AND BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED, THAT A COPY OF THIS MEASURE BE TRANSMITTED TO THE PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE OF THE SENATE, THE SPEAKER OF THE ASSEMBLY, AND THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA.
