UNDER
EXISTING LAW, THE CALIFORNIA STATE BOARD OF PHARMACY IS REQUIRED TO LICENSE AND
ISSUE A CERTIFICATE TO ANY APPLICANT WHO MEETS SPECIFIED REQUIREMENTS, INCLUDING
SPECIFIED EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS.
THIS
MEASURE WOULD MEMORIALIZE THE LEGISLATURE AND THE GOVERNOR TO EMACT LEGISLATION
THAT WOULD REQUIRE EVERY
VOTE:
MAJORITY.

RELATING TO
WHEREAS,
PHARMACY SCHOOLS DO NOT NECESSARILY INCLUDE THE STUDY OF GERIATRICS IN THE
COURSEWORK REQUIRED OF ALL STUDENTS, AND FEW GRADUATES CHOOSE TO SPECIALIZE IN
UNDERSTANDING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PATIENT AGE AND THE EFFECTIVENESS OF
PRESCRIBED MEDICATIONS; AND
WHEREAS,
IT IS HIGHLY DESIRABLE THAT ALL STUDENTS AND PRACTICING PHARMACISTS BE
KNOWLEDGABLE REGARDING AGE AS A FACTOR IN DETERMINING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF
PRESCRIBED MEDICATIONS; AND
WHEREAS,
MOST PHARMACY SCHOOLS RECEIVE STATE FUNDING, OR OTHER FORMS OF DIRECT OR
INDIRECT FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FROM STATE GOVERNMENT; MOW, THEREFORE, BE IT
RESOLVED,
BY THE SENIOR ASSEMBLY AND THE SENIOR SENATE, JOINTLY, THAT THE SENIOR
LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA AT ITS 2002 REGULAR SESSION, A MAJORITY
OF THE MEMBERS VOTING THEREFOR, HEREBY PROPOSES THAT EVERY PHARMACY SCHOOL THAT
RECEIVES STATE FUNDING BE REQUIRED TO INCLUDE IN ITS CURRICULUM THE STUDY OF
GERIATRICS, INCLUDING EXAMINING THE RELATIONSHIPS AMONG PATIENT AGE, FREQUENTLY
OCCURRING PHYSICAL CONDITIONS, AND THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PRESCRIBED MEDICATIONS;
AND BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED,
THAT THE SENIOR LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF
RESOLVED,
THAT A COPY OF THIS MEASURE BE TRANSMITTED TO THE SPEAKER OF THE ASSEMBLY, THE
PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE OF THE SENATE, AND THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF
CALIFORNIA.
